Region in Europe

The Berlin-Brandenburg capital region is located in the centre of Europe and surrounded by numerous regional authorities (e.g. other German regions, Polish voivodeships). The Raumordnungsgesetz [German Spatial Planning Act] stipulates that planning agencies must coordinate draft spatial plans officially with other regional authorities.

Besides general regional planning project activities in the two transnational Interreg programmes Baltic Sea Region and Central Europe play a central role for better cooperation in Europe. 

The capital region also cooperates with numerous neighbours and partners in various informal networks. The Scandria®Alliance is of special strategic relevance. The capital region is also represented by the Spatial Planning Department Berlin-Brandenburg in the networks METREX and IKM. German-Polish cooperation also reinforces the capital region’s spatial ties with Poland in terms of European integration.

Transnational Cooperation – Interreg B

The EU funding instrument Interreg supports, among other things, the transnational cooperation of actors from the capital region with various project partners in order to develop solutions for territorial challenges in cross-national cooperation areas or macro-regions.

European Metropolitan Region

Berlin and Brandenburg are closely intertwined and together form the capital region. It is the largest metropolitan region in Germany. It is centrally located in the European Union and is the intersection of three trans-European transport corridors, which opens up special development opportunities.

German-Polish Cooperation

Due to the geographical location of the capital region, diverse structural relationships between the Berlin-Brandenburg capital region and the western Polish voivodeships are evident and spatial planning co-operation is necessary.

SCANDRIA®Alliance: The shortest route between Scandinavia and the Adriatic Sea

The Scandria®Alliance is an arena for collaboration of cities and regions between Scandinavia and the Adriatic. The aim of the Alliance is to strengthen the shortest link between the European North and the northern part of the Adriatic Sea as a regional development and transport axis.

EU projects of the Joint Spatial Planning Department Berlin-Brandenburg

The Joint Spatial Planning Department Berlin-Brandenburg is involved in various cross-border and transnational EU projects and works with other European partners on spatial development issues and solutions to territorial challenges.
