A particular focus is on supporting cities in developing and implementing Sustainable Urban Mobility Plans (SUMPs). SUMPs are among the requirements that so-called “urban nodes” must meet in accordance with the guidelines for the development of a trans-European transport network (TEN-T). They are intended to strengthen the role of integrated mobility planning throughout Europe.
The project builds on a common challenge faced by all countries in the Baltic Sea region: the transition to zero-emission, safe, accessible, and efficient passenger and freight transport systems is not progressing fast enough. Based on needs analyses and the results of previous projects, targeted learning and capacity-building formats for sustainable urban mobility and logistics planning are being developed. In this way, the platform thus supports cities and regions in strengthening their planning and implementation capacities in the long term.
Key project results include a comprehensive assessment of sustainable urban mobility and logistics planning in the Baltic Sea region, peer learning and training opportunities for mobility planners, and concrete and coordinated policy recommendations for promoting active and efficient urban mobility at the local, national, macro-regional, and European levels.
The project consortium consists of seven partners from Finland, Sweden, Norway, Poland, Lithuania, Estonia, and Germany. The Joint Spatial Planning Department Berlin-Brandenburg participates in the platform on behalf of the Scandria Alliance network. The lead partner is the city of Turku (Finland), which represents the Union of the Baltic Cities network within the consortium. The coordinator of the policy area transport of the EU Strategy for the Baltic Sea Region (EUSBSR) is also involved.
